A video by Aaron Wilder enters the V I D E O S O U N D A R C H I V E in S15, a curated selection of 11 artists. The 10 other artists are Acey Rain (YANGYU), Anna Fo., Colby Lamson-Gordon, Daniela Lucato, Feixue Mei, Garen, Giganta, Kenji Kojima, stochastic reverie (tania cruz), and Vicky Chunxin Gong.

Micro Interview of Aaron Wilder:

What is your first aural / visual memory?

I can’t locate a first memory, only its absence. As a child, before ear tubes, sound reached me through fluid, altered and unstable, and I think that mediated perception came before anything I could later recall. What remains is the sense that experience arrived filtered from the start.

What is a sound and/or video work that played a significant part in your life?

A significant work for me was “Vertigo Sea” by John Akomfrah, a three-channel video installation I saw at SFMOMA in 2018 that enveloped me visually and aurally. Its elemental soundtrack of wind, ocean, and birds blended with footage of natural beauty and the violent history of the whaling industry, making the sea feel both sublime and terrible. The experience and its confrontation with human cruelty was a turning point that deepened my awareness of ecological and ethical urgency.

What is one tool you use most in your practice?

I work primarily by translating still images into time; breaking them into frames, manipulating them, and reassembling them as moving images. For technical apparatuses, I use Photoshop and Premiere most, but software is secondary to the act of slowing motion down until it becomes image again.
